PARTNERS WORKING TOGETHER FOR FLORIDA HOMEOWNERS

How a Florida coalition upgraded the wind mitigation inspection form

Florida homeowners pay some of the highest insurance costs in the country. A free wind mitigation inspection — available through the My Safe Florida Home Program — identifies how well a home can withstand a hurricane and translates that into insurance discounts. The form driving those inspections, the OIR-B1-1802, hadn’t kept pace with retrofit solutions that can actually make homes stronger.

Eight organizations changed that. They lobbied the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation to revise the 1802 form — adding performance-based options for retrofit roof-to-wall attachments, the most critical link in a home’s wind defense. Under the old form, homeowners who invested in proven retrofit solutions often couldn’t get credit. The revised form fixes that.

The coalition brought together inspectors, roofing professionals, researchers, and homeowner advocates. Different industries, one goal: make it easier and more affordable for Florida homeowners to strengthen their homes and lower their premiums.

The results are already moving. More than 1,000 wind mitigation inspectors have been trained on the updated form. Roofing contractors are seeing new demand for performance-based retrofit options. Homeowners who make eligible improvements now have a clear path to meaningful premium discounts — no major renovation required.

Call it a win-win. That’s what it is.
